Meet Glass and Glazing Federation head of commercial and operations Amy Hopton-Smith

Tell us about your role at the Glass and Glazing Federation…

As head of commercial and operations for the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), it is both a privilege and a responsibility to reflect on the organisation’s heritage while also looking ahead to its future. Companies such as West Norfolk Glass, a proud founding member, have played a vital role in shaping not only the GGF, but the wider glazing and fenestration industry across the UK.

West Norfolk Glass is a founding member of the GGF. How did the GGF come about?

The GGF was established almost 50 years ago by a small yet influential group of forward-thinking businesses across the glazing supply chain, including manufacturers, installers and specialist suppliers.

At the time, the industry was fragmented and largely unregulated with little consistency in standards or representation. Founding members, such as West Norfolk Glass, recognised the need for a unified voice, one that could raise standards, provide technical leadership and build trust with consumers.

What began as a relatively modest collective of companies has since grown into the leading trade body for the UK’s glazing and fenestration sector, representing businesses of all sizes and disciplines.

How has the GGF and what challenges does it face?

Over the past five decades, the GGF has been at the heart of the industry’s evolution.

The sector itself has transformed significantly from the widespread use of single glazing to today’s high-performance, energy-efficient double and triple glazing systems. Alongside this, increasingly stringent building regulations, improved safety standards and a growing focus on sustainability have reshaped the way companies operate.

Throughout these changes, the GGF has played a central role working closely with government, developing technical standards and supporting its members through periods of both challenge and opportunity.

The industry has faced a number of key challenges including economic downturns, evolving legislation and ongoing skills shortages. Yet, through collaboration and strong leadership, it has continued to adapt and progress.

As many in the sector would agree, the GGF has not simply responded to change, it has helped drive it.

Why is GGF membership so important for companies such as West Norfolk Glass?

Today’s operating environment is more complex than ever. Businesses must navigate tightening energy efficiency requirements, increasing regulatory scrutiny from bodies such as the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and continued cost and supply chain pressures. At the same time, maintaining high standards and consumer confidence remains essential.

For companies like West Norfolk Glass, GGF membership provides a clear strategic advantage. It offers access to expert technical guidance, up-to-date regulatory support and a strong voice in industry and government discussions. Just as importantly, it demonstrates credibility, showing customers and stakeholders a commitment to quality, compliance, and professionalism. In today’s market, being part of the GGF is not just about belonging, it is about staying ahead.

Why is it important to look for GGF membership when choosing a glazing company for your home?

For homeowners, choosing a GGF member offers real reassurance. It is a clear sign that the company has been vetted, adheres to a strict code of practice and is committed to delivering high standards of workmanship and customer care.

In a market where trust is key, that level of accountability is invaluable. Consumers also benefit from added protection, including access to dispute resolution schemes, helping ensure peace-of-mind throughout the process. Put simply, the GGF badge is a mark of confidence when choosing a glazing company.

What does the future hold for the GGF?

As the industry continues to evolve, the GGF is entering an exciting new phase under the leadership of its new director, Lauren Mawford (pictured above right with Amy). Alongside a strong focus on collaboration and alignment, there is a clear drive to modernise the organisation ensuring it remains relevant agile, and fully equipped to support today’s glazing businesses.

This includes evolving how the GGF engages with members, streamlining access to technical guidance and strengthening its voice in an increasingly fast-moving regulatory environment.

The organisation is prioritising support for members navigating complex requirements, particularly in relation to OPSS and wider compliance. At the same time, there is a clear emphasis on helping the sector meet net zero targets and addressing ongoing skills challenges.

Looking ahead, the GGF will continue to play a vital role in bringing the industry together, raising standards and ensuring businesses are equipped to thrive in a changing environment.

This next chapter is firmly focused on progress, modernising while building on nearly 50 years of industry leadership and experience and shaping a stronger, more unified future for the glazing and fenestration sector.
